Eliezer “Elie” Wiesel was a noted Holocaust survivor, award-winning novelist, journalist, human rights activist and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Wiesel was born in Sighet, a Romanian shtetl, to an Orthodox Jewish family on September 30, 1928. His parents, Shlomo and Sarah, owned a grocery store in the village.
When the Auschwitz Camp was evacuated, Wiesel claimed that he and his father Shlomo Wiesel decided to join the Germans retreating west. The Wiesels eventually ended up at the Buchenwald Camp, where Elie’s father died shortly before the camp was liberated by U.S. troops on 11 April 1945.
