A Single Man is the first of John's albums to not include lyricist Bernie Taupin, and the first since his debut Empty Sky without producer Gus Dudgeon. The returning members of his band are percussionist Ray Cooper and guitarist Davey Johnstone; the latter played on only one song on the album.
The organ has been named the Sir Elton John and Ray Cooper Organ, and was heard for the first time on 7 October 2013. In a greeting to Cooper on his 70th birthday, John's website stated that when Elton composed the song "Tambourine" for his 2016 Wonderful Crazy Night album, he made sure to bring in Cooper to play the instrument on the track.

Ray Cooper is a British session percussionist whose recording career started in the 1960s, recording with the WHO, among others, and is still going. Among his early jobs were America, Carly Simon, David Essex, Blue Mink and especially Elton John (he played on most of his '70s albums). He had also played on Nicky Hopkins' 1973 solo album.
