Ben Lane ( Audie Murphy) is breaking a horse in the desert that he believes to be stray. He is caught by some ranchers who treat him as a horse thief when he is saved by Frank Jesse ( Dan Duryea ).

A woman hires two gunslingers to escort her across Indian territory to her husband, but she has a hidden agenda: to kill her husband's murderer. The plot thickens when she tries to seduce one of the gunslingers and a shootout ensues with the other one. The woman dies, but the gunslingers get six black horses as a reward.
A sometimes astonishingly grim western, Six Black Horses ostensibly stars Audie Murphy, but is effortlessly stolen by Frank Jesse (Dan Duryea). Wrongly accused of horse theft, Ben Lane (Murphy) is rescued by ruthless but sentimental gunslinger Jesse.
