Early in the 20th century, middle-aged lawyer Fredrik Egerman (Gunnar Björnstrand) and his young wife, Anne (Ulla Jacobsson), have still not consummated their marriage, while Fredrik's son (Bjorn Bjelvenstam) finds himself increasingly attracted to his new stepmother.
