TEXT: Officers’ Club – Getting Together on Alcatraz When Alcatraz became a federal penitentiary, this building was dubbed the “Officers’ Club.” Soon known by island residents as the “Social Hall,” it was used by prison staff and their families for parties, dances, and other sorts of recreation.
May 2, 2008 · On the island was an Officer’s Club, which was built in 1912 by the U.S. Army (the island was a military prison from 1859 to 1934) and became the center of social activity for Alcatraz residents.
They had their own social club with a bowling alley and soda fountain, and a small convenience store. The children of staff members went to school in San Francisco every day by boat. As one long-time Alcatraz staff member observed, Alcatraz was like “a small town with a big jail.”
