Sophia Dorothea of Hanover (26 March [O.S. 16 March] 1687 – 28 June 1757) was Queen in Prussia and Electress of Brandenburg during the reign of her husband, King Frederick William I, from 1713 to 1740. She was the mother of Frederick the Great (King Frederick II of Prussia).

Sophia, electress of Hanover (1630–1714). Sophia was a granddaughter of James I by his daughter Elizabeth, who had married the elector palatine. On the death in 1700 of Anne's last surviving child, William, duke of Gloucester, Sophia was the next non-catholic heir, and was recognized in the Act of Settlement of 1701.

A letter from Anne firmly banning Sophia and her family from England arrived a few days before Sophia’s death and deeply upset her. Aged 83, she died at the palace at Herrenhausen in Hanover, collapsing after rushing indoors to get out of a sudden rain shower.
