Aug 13, 2010 · Sotirios Kyrgiakos has announced his retirement from international football with Greece. Speaking on his official website, Liverpool's No.16 said: "The Greek National Team was one of the most important chapters in my career. "At this time I would like to close this chapter. I want to wish all the best to the Greek National Team."

Kyrgiakos was the only member of the Greek international side to play every minute of the qualifying campaign for Euro 2008. He missed the victorious Euro 2004 because of knee ligament injury, but featured in all of Greece's three games in the Euro 2008 finals. Unfortunately for Kyrgiakos Greece finished the tournament without a single point.
Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos made 49 appearances for Liverpool between 2009 and 2011. He was signed from AEK Athens by Rafael Benitez at the start of the 2009-10 season, ending a search for defensive cover following the departure of Sami Hyypia.
