Croatian is a South Slavic language spoken by about 6.7 million people mainly in Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is an official language in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in the province of Vojvodina in Serbia. It is also recognised as a minority language in a number of other countries.
The Eastern South Slavic dialects form the eastern subgroup of the South Slavic languages. They are spoken mostly in Bulgaria and North Macedonia, and adjacent areas in the neighbouring countries. They form the so-called Balkan Slavic linguistic area, which encompasses the southeastern part of the dialect continuum of South Slavic.
Key to these peoples and cultures are the Slavic languages: Russian, Ukrainian, and Belorussian to the east; Polish, Czech, and Slovak to the west; and Slovenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Macedonian, and Bulgarian to the south.
