May 1, 2024 · United States Space Force (USSF), sixth branch of the U.S. armed forces, whose mission is to lead space-related military operations within the U.S. Department of Defense. The USSF was established by the U.S. Congress via the fiscal year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, having gathered bipartisan support.

History. The U.S. Space Force was established Dec. 20, 2019 when the National Defense Authorization Act was signed into law (with bi-partisan support), creating the first new branch of the armed services in 73 years. The establishment of the USSF resulted from widespread recognition that Space was a national security imperative.
