"Pet the Rock" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 14. In this episode, Patrick's new pet rock catches the eye of a mischievous rock collector.

SpongeBob and Patrick are going to the Pet Park to see Gary's new tricks. Patrick realizes he wants his own pet too, so he and SpongeBob go to the pet store. Patrick looks into an aquarium and sees his pet: not the animal inside, but a giant rock decoration. He drags the rock, which he names Rolly, on a leash to the park and plays with it. A geode collector, Percival Rockhound, outside sees Rolly and decides he must have it so he can crack it open. When Percival asks Patrick about Rolly, Patrick thinks he wants to play and ties him up with the leash.

Patrick goes home and watches TV, and him jumping on the couch causes Rolly to roll around the house and wreck his furniture. He calls SpongeBob, who suggests that he feed Rolly. Patrick feeds him some cement mix and he grows bigger. SpongeBob tells him to take Rolly for a walk and to use the bathroom. Patrick drags Rolly downtown, leading him to run over a trash can Percival was hiding in. He notices how dirty Rolly is, calls SpongeBob, and sees a rock grooming place nearby. It turns out to be a trap by Percival, who is trying to open Rolly for himself. When he chisels Rolly, it rolls off and crushes him. Patrick likes how Rolly looks after being groomed.

    General

•This episode's title is a play on the phrase "pet the dog." •Additionally, the title of the season 13 episode, "Pat the Dog," parodied that phrase. •It is also similar to the season 11 episode "Pat the Horse."

    Episode references

•The pet store has several pets that are from previous episodes. They include: •The sea chimps from "King Plankton." •The sea whelks from "Whelk Attack." •Mrs. Puff's peanut worms from "Growth Spout." •The earworm from the episode of the same name. •The sea bunnies from "Bunny Hunt." •Puffy Fluffy from "A Pal for Gary." •Also, it was inferred that Patrick chose Puffy Fluffy, but he instead chose the rock that the Puffy Fluffy was sitting on. •The worm outside the pet store looks similar to Wormy, however, it is a light shade of yellow. •The crab outside the pet store is the same one from "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?" when SpongeBob gets scared by the mysterious creatures before falling off a cliff and bumping his head. •Various items from previous episodes reappear in Patrick's house. There is a picture of Patrick's family, the dinosaur foot, and the tiki heads from The Patrick Star Show, and the framed photo of him and SpongeBob he has in "Patrick's Coupon," the pillow with SpongeBob's face draw on from "Rise and Shine" as well as many assorted pieces of "Patrick! The Game," and the boxes of the games he used to make it from the episode of the same name. When Rolly smashes things, the alarm clock from "No Pictures Please," a different board game, a blender, and a graduation cap can be seen flying around. •The shelf in Patrick's room contains the rubber chicken and toy monkeys from "Lost and Found," the creepy doll from "Sanitation Insanity," a box of crayons from "Whale Watching," the fire truck from "Ink Lemonade," Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy actual figures, and a bowling ball. Next to the shelf is the giant mallet he used when acting as Snail Fail in "Sir Urchin and Snail Fail." •Coincidentally, Dan Becker also boarded that episode, along with Fred Osmond. •Nosferatu is reading Bat Fancy magazine, from "Squidferatu." There are also jellyfish bats from the same episode circling him, and his cage from "Slappy Daze" is seen beside him. •Patrick uses a banana as a phone, like he did in The Patrick Star Show episode "10 & 1 Toilets."

    Cultural references

•The scene where Rolly roars while the banner falls is a reference to the climax scene with another dinosaur, Rexy, in Jurassic Park.
