It is one of 24 city squares planned and created by Georges-Eugène Haussmann and Jean-Charles Adolphe Alphand. The Square occupies the site of a medieval fortress in Paris, built by the Knights Templar.

Square du Temple is a small public garden located in the heart of the Marais, opposite the Carreau du Temple and the town hall of the 3rd district. It was landscaped on the site of the Enclos du Temple, the fortified monastery of the Knights Templar in the 13th century. The pond, the man-made waterfall, the music kiosk and the guard booth are some of the features of this historic site.
