Aug 25, 2011 · Star Trek: The Motion Picture was one of the last heavily-marketed, non-animated big studio films with just a G rating, and the only Star Trek film to receive this rating (although in 2001, the director's cut got a PG for sci-fi action and mild language). Ever since, such productions were released with at least a PG rating.
Ebert praises the special effects and the alien ship, but criticizes the familiarity of the Star Trek characters and the plot. He compares the movie to 2001 and Star Wars, and suggests that some viewers may be too sophisticated for their own good.
