In March 2021, Paramount set Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez to write a new Star Trek film, based on her original idea, while a separate script was developed by Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The studio scheduled the latter film for release on June 9, 2023, and hired Matt Shakman to direct it in July.
