In a year marked by a new Avengers sequel, the first Fast & Furious spinoff and a Joker origin story, Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker may still very well be the most anticipated movie of 2019. And true to form, Lucasfilm is keeping this project tightly under wraps as we inch closer to its December 2019 release date.

Luckily, new details have come out thanks to Star Wars Celebration Chicago and the debut of the final trailer. From the cast and crew to the title to the release date, here's everything we know (and don't know) about the latest entry in the epic Star Wars saga.

Be sure to also check out everything we know about Wonder Woman 1984 and everything we know about The Batman.

Star Wars: Episode IX is slated to hit theaters on December 20, 2019. Like Rogue One and the previous two chapters in the sequel trilogy, a new Star Wars movie is debuting in December rather than the traditional May release date.

In fact, Episode IX was originally scheduled for release on May 24, 2019. However, the film was delayed after original director Colin Trevorrow was reportedly fired and The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams was brought on board. Abrams announced that production on Episode IX had wrapped on February 15.

Episode IX's official title is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Naturally, fans are already furiously speculating over the true meaning. We have some ideas of our own on how the new movie might redefine the Skywalker name.

Lucasfilm waited an abnormally long time before revealing the title, dropping the announcement along with the first trailer at Star Wars Celebration Chicago in April 2019. And it turns out that director JJ Abrams was keeping the title a secret from almost everyone. Even Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and many of the film's stars only learned the title mere days or even hours beforehand.

The first teaser trailer for Episode IX debuted at Star Wars Celebration Chicago in April 2019. While many fans were hoping for a Holiday 2018 debut, a la The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm followed the example set by The Last Jedi and waited until Celebration to reveal the first footage.

Disney released a shorter, second trailer at D23 in August, one which sparked plenty of conversation around a cryptic shot of Rey apparently crossing to the Dark Side.

The final trailer for The Rise of Skywalker arrived in October 2019, bringing with it new hints as to the plot of the final Skywalker Saga film.

Check out our deep-dive into the Easter eggs and plot details revealed in the final trailer:

Episode IX is directed by J.J. Abrams, who's returning to wrap up a trilogy he began in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio. John Williams will return to compose the score once again, though he's revealed Episode IX will be his final Star Wars film.

Most of the cast from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi will return for the sequel. That includes stars Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), along with Lupita Nyong'o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and even Mark Hamill as the now very dead Luke Skywalker.

Look for at least two other familiar faces from the Original Trilogy to appear, as Billy Dee Williams will be reprising his role as Lando Calrissian and Ian McDiarmid will return as the apparently still living Emperor Palpatine. The film will also add several brand new cast members in undisclosed roles, including Keri Russell as master thief Zorri Bliss and Richard E. Grant as First Order Allegiant General Pryde. Naomi Ackie has been cast as a Resistance ally named Jannah, one who Williams jokingly (we think?) suggested might be the daughter of Lando. Dominic Monaghan and Matt Smith have both been cast in undisclosed roles.

The final trailer also features a cameo of The Ghost, the ship used by the main characters in Star Wars Rebels. This is fueling hope that Hera or other Rebels favorites could make their live-action debuts.

Even with the first teaser trailer now available, we know very little about the plot of Episode IX. The most Abrams and his cast were willing to reveal at Star Wars Celebration Chicago is that there's a lengthier time gap between Episode VIII and IX, and that the film will feature Rey, Poe, Finn and Rose embarking on a new mission together.

Given how The Last Jedi ended, certain assumptions can be made about the plot. General Leia's Resistance only barely survived the wrath of the First Order, numbering just a few dozen soldiers aboard one battered hunk of junk of a ship. We'll likely see Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose and the rest working to rebuild the ranks and rally the galaxy against the First Order. And though Luke Skywalker died as a result of his final confrontation with his nephew in The Last Jedi, expect him to reappear in Force Ghost form, mentoring Rey in her Jedi ascension much as Obi-Wan and Yoda once did for him. It's also safe to say Episode IX will reveal once and for all whether Kylo Ren can be pulled back to the light.

The teaser trailer shows Rey and friends approaching the wreckage of the Death Star (wreckage we now know is located on an oceanic moon called Kef Bir) and ends with Emperor Palpatine's cackling laughter. This, along with more teases in the final trailer, suggests Palpatine is still alive and will emerge as the true villain of the sequel trilogy, with Episode IX perhaps borrowing a page or two from Expanded Universe stories like Dark Empire. With Lucasfilm emphasizing the movie as the end of the Skywalker saga, Palpatine's return does seem fitting.

That leaves plenty of other burning questions left to answer in this final part of the sequel trilogy. Will we ever learn more about Supreme Leader Snoke and his possible connection to Palpatine? Are Rey's parents truly no one important? And perhaps most important of all, what does it mean that the Force has "awakened" again? Will the Jedi return in full force, or will something new take their place?

Thanks to a recent Vanity Fair cover story, we do know the names of some of the new planets appearing in the sequel. The Rise of Skywalker will introduce the snow-covered, scoundrel-filled Kijimi and a new desert planet named Pasaana. The VF article also confirms the Knights of Ren will appear and teases that the Force bond between Rey and Kylo Ren "will turn out to run even deeper than previously revealed." On the Knights of Ren front, we also got more insight into the nature of this mysterious group. An upcoming Marvel Comics prequel series called The Rise of Kylo Ren will explore how Ben Solo and his uncle once fought the Knights of Ren before Ben fell to the Dark Side.

Episode IX will also feature footage of the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, despite the fact that Fisher passed away in December 2016, well before filming began on Episode IX. How exactly this will be accomplished has been one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the film.

Reports have indicated that originally Leia was intended to have a prominent role in Episode IX, akin to Han Solo's role in The Force Awakens and Luke Skywalker's in The Last Jedi. Obviously, the screenplay had to be rewritten to account for Fisher's passing. And while there have been many conflicting reports regarding how Fisher's posthumous appearance will be made possible, we now know her likeness won't be digitally recreated (as it was in Rogue One). Instead, Abrams will be relying on unused archival footage pulled from The Force Awakens. These scenes will be reworked to fit within the context of Episode IX's plot.

According to Fisher's brother, Todd, the end result will be surprisingly cohesive. "There’s a lot of minutes of footage. I don’t mean just outtakes,” Fisher said on Good Morning America. “This is unused, new content that could be woven into the storyline. That’s what’s going to give everybody such a great kick. It’s going to look like it was meant to be. Like it was shot yesterday.”

The final Rise of Skywalker trailer also features a brief vocal cameo from Fisher, one which could imply Leia will die and become a Force Ghost during the course of the movie. The theatrical poster also gives Fisher top billing, so hopefully Leia will still be able to play a significant role in the story, even if her actual screen time is limited.

As much as Disney and Lucasfilm have kept this sequel tightly under wraps, there have been a few notable developments along the way. Here's a quick breakdown of the Episode IX timeline to date:
