Stella Adler (born Feb. 10, 1901, New York, N.Y., U.S.—died Dec. 21, 1992, Los Angeles, Calif.) was an American actress, teacher, and founder of the Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting in New York City (1949), where she tutored performers in “the method” technique of acting ( see Stanislavsky method ).

In 1972, the Stella Adler Studio of Acting became the first professional actor training school to become affiliated with NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. The program has continued since, leading students to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and combining academic studies at New York University with professional training at the studio.
