SUMMARY. Stratford Hall is a 1,500-acre plantation located in Westmoreland County on the Potomac River. The politician and planter Thomas Lee purchased the land for Stratford in 1717; although no records exist to indicate when the house was built, construction likely began in 1738 and was completed sometime in the 1740s.
Nestled along the Potomac River, Stratford Hall’s nearly 2,000 acres comes to life through the presentation and preservation of the 18th-century Great House, vibrant gardens, nature trails revealing breathtaking river views, and the stories of all who lived here. The politician and planter Thomas Lee had the house constructed beginning around 1738. Francis Lightfoot Lee and Richard Henry Lee, both of whom signed the Declaration of Independence, resided in the house, as did Henry Lee III, a hero of the Revolutionary War and the governor of Virginia.
