Minna and Mio are at Western Unified Combatant Command as General Patton rages to General Bradley about how Operation Southwind has to be postponed. Back in Antwerp, Shizuka meets up with Yoshika as they both head off to the new 501st base. At the 501st briefing room, Shizuka accidently trips and makes a fool of herself in front of the rest of the witches. Yoshika cheers Shizuka up as they joined Lynette is touring the base. However, Shizuka still feels like a bit of an outside and a step behind the other witches in the 501st. During training, Yoshika suddenly loses the ability to fly her Striker Unit. After a doctor's analysis, it is discovered that the cause is a drop in magic pressure which results in Yoshika's magic being not as effective. Despite this news, Yoshika is still determined to do whatever it takes to regain her magic to its full potential and for the time being is barred from flying.
For Shizuka, she continues to struggle to find her place in the 501st by herself. With a little advice from Perrine and Lynette, as well as seeing Yoshika training, Shizuka begins to see that she can't hide in other people's shadows and that she should do what she can to support others. The next day, the Neuroi launch a coordinated attack and decoy away most of the witches out to sea and leaving the base vulnerable to a Neuroi that evaded radar detection by flying under the radar. Minna still decides against Yoshika and Shizuka from flying as neither are fully combat ready witches and both are barely half a witch. However, with Yoshika's passionate insistence and Hattori also wishing to go into battle, both convince Minna that with the two of them working together, they can make up for their shortcomings.
•It is noted that Gertrud has been promoted to Squadron Leader, taking over the position in the 501st that was formerly held by Mio until she retired as a witch.
•The map behind Minna before she introduces Shizuka shows that the hive over Berlin is named Wolf. The name may be a reference to the fact that Hitler's preferred nickname was Wolf. Alternatively, it could be referring to the Wolf's Lair or "Wolfsschanze" in German. This was Hitler's Eastern Front headquarters in what is now Poland and was in used from 1941 to 1945. Despite being heavily guarded with three security layers and over 54,000 mines, the Wolf's Lair was the scene of the 20 July 1944 assassination attempt on Hitler by Claus von Stauffenberg who tried to kill Hitler with a briefcase bomb while attending a conference. The assassination attempt failed and the coup collapsed shortly afterwards. Either potential reference suggested here has not been officially confirmed.
George S. Patton
A four star US general during World War II, Patton was vital in developing the armies armored doctrine before and during the war. He commanded troops in North Africa, Sicily before leading a speedy and aggressive attack utilizing reconnaissance, artillery, air support, and reconnaissance by fire from tanks to break out of the Normandy beachheads to race across France only to be halted by supply issues. During the Battle of the Bulge rerouted most of his Third Army to help relive the besieged soldiers at Bastogne. Afterwards, he would command his troops as they crosses the Rhine and ended the war in Czechoslovakia. Known as a great orator, Patton's speeches inspired the troops under his command. Having a colorful and at times rash personality, this would often get Patton into trouble with the press and higher command which made him a somewhat controversial figure. The most famous incident was him slapping two soldiers who were suffering from shell-shock in Sicily which resulted in Patton being temporarily removed from command.
Omar Nelson Bradley
General of the Army for the US, Bradley started the war by helping to reorganize the entire II Corp after their defeat at Kasserine Pass in 1943. Bradley would then go on to lead the US First Army during the Normandy landings and helped plan for Operation Cobra. Later, he went on to command his troops during the Battle of the Bulge and invading Germany. During this time, Bradley would command the Twelfth Army Group which would consist of forty-three divisions and 1.3 million men which was the largest formation of US soldiers to serve under a single commander. Bradley would end World War II as a four star general. Though mostly gentle and polite person, Bradley could be harsh disciplinarian when push came to shove.
Operation Southwind and Operation Nordwind
The Operation Southwind mentioned by Patton in this episode has two references. Operation Southwind was a German offensive from 17 to 24 February 1945, it involved German armor and infantry successfully defeating a Soviet bridgehead across the Hron River in Hungary. This was one of the last successful offensive operations the Germans had in World War II. On the Western Front, from 31 of December 1944 to 25 February 1945, the Germans launched Operation Nordwind, an attack in the Alsace and Lorraine area against the US Seventh and French First Army with the objective of destroying these Allied forces. The operation ended in failure for the Germans. So the Operation Southwind in the witch's universe is named after an Eastern Front operation but shares more parallels with Operation Nordwind as it is a Western Front battle which is where the 501st story is taking place.
