  3. Dec 20, 2006 · This is the Superman sequel that should have been, VASTLY superior to the ridiculous theatrical release. I won't be getting into much detail about the story which should be well known in a 20+ year old film, but instead will concentrate on what makes this new version so much better than the original.

Decades before rabid fans pestered Warner Bros to release the Snyder Cut of Justice League, fans had been asking the studio to release Richard Donner’s “cut” of Superman II. The only problem was that cut never existed since Donner left the production before it was completed. The other problem was that, technically, the film was produced independent...

Warner has provided Superman II: The Richard Donner Cutwith an HEVC-encoded 2160p transfer with HDR10 that retains the intended 2.39:1 theatrical aspect ratio. Picture quality is all over the map, unfortunately. Much of the footage looks very good, particularly the restored footage, appearing a bit sharper than the theatrical cut. It suffers from some of the same fidelity issues as the theatrical cut, revealing many of the limitations in recording technology of the time. Surrounds and heights are employed quite extensively, creating a nice immersive experience. LFE is good for a f...

Nothing new here, although Warner does include the commentary track and Donner’s introduction (poorly upscaled from 480i/30 to 1080p/24) on the UHD Disc. The included Blu-ray disc is the version included with the Superman: The Motion Picture Anthologyboxed set, which contained the same VC-1 encode as the original Blu-ray release but upgraded the 5....

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut is a nice curiosity piece that gives fans a good idea of what Superman IIcould have been if Donner had been allowed to stay on. Video and audio are marginally better than either previous Blu-ray releases, and no new extras have been included.

  5. Jun 19, 2021 · By Jeff Ames. Superman II turned 40 this week and still carries the rare distinction of a sequel that actually lives up to its predecessor. I’d be lying if I said I enjoyed the follow-up more...

Richard Donner's cut of Superman II is not the definitive answer to "what if Donner had been allowed to finish Superman II?" It is not a stand alone, completed, film so much as it is an abstract representation of where he intended to go.
