The Barretts of Wimpole Street is a 1934 American romantic drama film directed by Sidney Franklin based on the 1930 play of the same title by Rudolf Besier. It depicts the real-life romance between poets Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, despite the opposition of her abusive father Edward Moulton-Barrett.
"The Barretts of Wimpole Street" made in 1957, is a remake of an earlier MGM movie made in 1934. Here Jennifer Jones plays the invalid poetess Elizabeth Barrett. The film focus primarily on her, but also tells the story of her siblings and her father (John Gielgud). Elizabeth Barrett is an invalid, confined to her bedroom, where she writes poetry.
Robert asks for Elizabeth's hand in marriage, but Edward refuses to allow it. Elizabeth must battle her father for the right to live her own life, but eventually she is able to wed Robert and bring herself back to health. Director Sidney A. Franklin also helmed a remake of The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1957); it was his last film.
