Detective Philo Vance (Paul Lukas) gets an anonymous letter threatening wealthy Lynn Llewellyn (Donald Cook) if he visits his Uncle Kinkaid's casino. Vance meets with the bickering family, including Lynn and his wife, as well as secretary Doris Reed (Rosalind Russell), who offers to assist him.
