Mood is priority in the dense, enigmatic, and absorbing screenwriting debut of author Cormac McCarthy. Though The Counselor saunters along with the skeleton of a thriller, the meat is that sensation of perfectly assembled words strung together in unfamiliar voices. It's not so much what Michael Fassbender, Javier Bradem, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, and Brad Pitt talk about — a drug deal, a vengeful cartel, and an array of backstabbings — rather, it's how they say it, where they say it, and who they say it to.

Ridley Scott directs the picture like he's operating on a child, restrained so as not to damage the intricacies of McCarthy's script. The flourishes come through bizarre design and wicked performances spouting metaphor on top of metaphor. In book form, it's the type of beast that would require, and satisfy, in the constant flipping back of pages to re-read.

The Counselor (Fassbender) and Laura (Cruz) are as happy as a couple can be. We first see them tussling under the sheets of their bed, whispering sweet nothings while achieving climax. Already, danger wafts through the air. The lovestruck lawyer finds himself so enamored, he zips off to Europe to purchase the perfect diamond ring. In these early scenes where character might typically be established, McCarthy slathers the screen with poetic waxing. Even scenes between Fassnbender and his diamond dealer (Bruno Ganz) feel constructed out of some universal parable that never reveals itself. And yet, the writer's words are hypnotic. The Counselor is more like a two-hour Fassbender audio book than a conventional drama.

Despite the impenetrable exterior, The Counselor is tense as hell. Though he devotes himself to his woman, the Counselor finds himself sucked into a criminal underworld draped in millionaire decorations. Reiner (Bardem) is an eccentric playboy whose riches are traced back to the shadiest deals in Juárez. Counselor gets a taste and he wants in. Scott relishes in the seductive quality of money to the point of buffoonery.

The real stars of director Ridley Scott's moody, bloody crime thriller The Counselor aren't Fassbender, Bardem, Diaz, Cruz, or Pitt but writer Cormac McCarthy's words.
