Following the capitulation of the French to Germany's Nazi invaders, a unit of defiant French soldiers become German prisoners of war. Except for the Nazi-sympathizing wine-seller Andre Duval (Hume Cronyn), the prisoners are overtly hostile to their captors, which leads to their increasingly sadistic treatment by camp commander Maj.
