Nov 24, 2009 · On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan is shot in the chest by a would-be assassin named John Hinckley Jr. outside a Washington, D.C. hotel. The president was hit by six bullets, but luckily missed his heart by inches. He was hospitalized for two hours and resumed his duties the next day. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and released in 1999.
