In the case of descent it actually fails to suspend disbelief and makes the movie a rather tired, boring, and linear experience. Nothing is surprising, nothing is hidden, everything is put out in the open and leaves no room for suspense, or tension, or irony. Sorry to see it wasted like this, but there's no changing it now.
The Descent is a 1999 science fiction / horror novel by American author Jeff Long. It describes the discovery and exploration of an extensive labyrinth of tunnels and passages stretching throughout the Earth's upper mantle, found to be inhabited by a malicious species of alternately-evolved troglofauna hominids.

They are also vicious pack hunters who can work as individuals or as a group to hunt and take down prey. They are animal like and thus have no real higher intellect beyond that of an intelligent animal. When designing the Crawlers the creators of the Descent wanted them to be in essence "cavemen that never left the caves", thus their radical shift in evolution. The Crawlers were hidden from the main cast until filming began. This way, the shock the group have upon seeing the monsters was largely real. The Crawlers were originally going to be exclusively male, but the creators decided to add female and children Crawlers to show that it was an active colony, feeling having male-only Crawlers would...
