A naive and sensitive young gentleman, Louis Ives ( Paul Dano) fancies himself a budding writer, wishes he had lived in the 1920s of F. A young teacher who is a bookish and idealistic man moves into a room with an older man who is an escort and a walker for wealthy widows. He learns from him how to be an extra man, a hired companion for older women, and falls in love with his co-worker Mary. The film explores themes of identity, romance, and social class in New York City.
