May 23, 2021 · The man convicted of raping and murdering Seattle musician Mia Zapata in 1993, Jesus Mezquia, died in a Washington hospital in January 2021. He was 66 years old and had been serving a 36-year sentence for the crime. The case was solved by DNA testing and his arrest in 2003. Zapata's surviving bandmates and friends remember her as a friend, a musician, and a leader of the punk scene.
