Synopsis. The film opens on a pastoral forest scene in the 14th Century Italy. Sister Fernanda (Aubrey Plaza), dressed head to toe in full winter habit, is leading a donkey through the trees, and ultimately through a field and back to her convent where she puts it back into its stall.
