Big city advertising artist John Hamilton (Alan Ladd) abandons his career and relocates to a sleepy Connecticut community to paint for himself instead of for a paycheck. But his erratic spouse, Linda (Carolyn Jones), quickly grows bored with her quiet new life and begins to lash out at him. After turning to the bottle, Linda begins to openly insult her husband and even accuses him of beating her.
