The working titles of this film were Cry Innocent and The Midnight Story. According to a May 1955 Hollywood Reporter news item, Dick Irving Hyland wrote the film's story in 1949, and Ted Sherdeman was to work on updating the script. Only Robert Tallman, however, receives onscreen credit for the screenplay.

The Price of Fear is a good but not great noir that strings together a number of typical tropes of the genre but manages to put a slight twist on a few, mainly the wrong man framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Not only does he have to prove his innocence, but it’s for two separate incidents of hit and run and murder.
