French farm girl Madelon Claudet (Helen Hayes) falls in love with Larry (Neil Hamilton), an American artist. But, when his parents demand he return to the United States, she is left pregnant and alone. Desperate to provide for her son, Madelon takes up with Carlo (Lewis Stone), who provides her with money and jewels, but the jewelry turns out to be stolen, and Madelon is imprisoned.
