By Stephen D. Lutz. In the winter of 1944-1945, within Belgium’s Ardennes Forest, better known as the launching pad of the Battle of the Bulge, two war crimes were committed. The better known one—the “Malmedy Massacre”—resulted in the deaths of at least 85 defenseless GIs who surrendered.

Only in 2011 did they become internationally known as the “Wereth Eleven” through the film of the same name by Robert Child and Joseph Small. At this point our association would like to introduce the eleven soldiers who were cruelly murdered by the SS on December 17, 1944.
A docudrama about 11 black U.S. soldiers who were tortured and killed during the Battle of the Bulge is still attracting attention, nearly a year after winning the Founder’s Choice Award at the 2011 GI Film Festival in Washington. The festival receives promotional support from The American Legion.
