    The ninth season of The X-Files in the original run commenced on FOX network airing in the United States on November 11, 2001 before concluding on May 19, 2002. The storyline for season nine focused on a government conspiracy resulting in the creation of super soldiers.

    Mitch Pileggi is promoted to regular cast member, having been recurring in the role as Walter Skinner since near the end of season 7. Annabeth Gish is promoted to regular as Monica Reyes, having appeared in a recurring role in the previous season.

    This season features the absence of David Duchovny as Fox Mulder, although he reprised the role for the two-part season finale The Truth.

    Although this ended up becoming the last season of the original run, it was originally intended for it to carry on but with John Doggett and Reyes as the main characters replacing Mulder and Scully.
