Theodorus van Gogh was a Dutch art dealer, the younger brother of Vincent van Gogh. Theo's unfailing financial and emotional support allowed his brother to devote himself entirely to painting. Theo died at the age of 33, six months after his brother died at the age of 37.
Van Gogh was inspired by Lhermitte’s depictions of rural life and he asked his brother Theo to send reproductions of Lhermitte’s work. This painting is typical—a sympathetic scene of peasant life depicting three generations. Van Gogh’s own early subjects included peasants and miners.

Theo was admitted to a clinic in Utrecht, possibly suffering from syphilis-related physical and mental symptoms.
