He is known for writing a letter disparaging General Washington and urging that the general be replaced; the backlash to the so-called 'Conway Cabal' led to Conway's resignation in April 1778.
Thomas Conway (February 27, 1735 – March 1795) served as a major general in the American Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He became involved with the alleged Conway Cabal with Horatio Gates. He later served with Émigré forces during the French Revolutionary Wars.

Thomas Conway (born February 27, 1735, Ireland—died c. 1800) was a general during the American Revolution who advocated that George Washington be replaced by Horatio Gates as the army’s commander in chief. Conway moved from Ireland to France at age six. In 1749 he joined the French army, and by 1772 he held the rank of colonel.
