A group of Basque settlers journeys via wagon train from Missouri to California, with dreams of starting new lives and planting treasured grape vines out West. The settlers are led by disreputable tracker Lon Bennett (Jeff Chandler), who lusts after Gabrielle (Susan Hayward) and means to have her no matter what.
