Thurgood Marshall (July 2, 1908 – January 24, 1993) was an American jurist and the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. Thurgood Marshall, earlier named Thoroughgood Marshall (which he changed in the 2nd or 3rd grade), was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Marshall served on the Court from 1967 to 1991.
