Tiberius III (Greek: Τιβέριος, romanized: Tibérios), born Apsimar (Latin: Apsimarus; Greek: Ἀψίμαρος, romanized: Apsímaros), was Byzantine emperor from 698 to 705. Little is known about his early life, other than that he was a droungarios, a mid-level commander, who served in the Cibyrrhaeot Theme.

Feb 5, 2024 · Tiberius III was Byzantine emperor from 15 February 698 to 10 July or 21 August 705 CE. In 696, Tiberius was part of an army led by John the Patrician sent by Byzantine Emperor Leontios to retake the city of Carthage in the Exarchate of Africa, which had been captured by the Arab Umayyads.

Tiberius III, Late 698 - Summer 705. After the loss of Carthage to the Arabs in 698 the disgruntled Byzantine forces declared Apsimar emperor and laid siege to Constantinople. The emperor Leontius, who had only recently taken the throne from Justinian II, was easily defeated and Aspimar took the throne with the name Tiberius.
