This is Jaffna, capital of the Northern Province, one of the areas where insurgents from the ethnic minority once fought for a Tamil nation during Sri Lanka's civil war. Tamils form 12% of the country's 22 million population but have long been electorally sidelined. They've traditionally voted for Tamil parties active in the north, but fisherman Paramasamy Thanabalasingam says this time their vote is split among many factions which claim to represent their concerns. "Anyhow, the new president will be chosen from the three main candidates and the decision will be made by the majority Sinhala people. There won’t be any change for us." Saturday's is the first presidential election since the island nation plunged into its worst financial crisis in decades in 2022. Economic recovery is at the core of a close three-way battle between President Ranil Wickremesinghe, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, and Marxist-leaning politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The fisherman says he and his family were displaced during the civil war, and the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with Sri Lanka's meltdown mean they've lurched from crisis to crisis. "Now I'm thinking about the future with no idea," he says. The 26-year civil war between Tamil insurgents and government forces ended in 2009. Rights groups accuse both sides of abuses during the conflict in which 40,000 people died, according to U.N. estimates.

Harris, who has robust protection from the U.S. Secret Service, made the statement amid heightened concern about political violence after a second potential assassination attempt against her opponent in the Nov. 5 presidential election, Republican Donald Trump. Harris mentioned her gun ownership in 2019 when she was a U.S. senator and again in last week's debate with Trump in what seemed like an appeal to more conservative voters. Harris owns a handgun for personal safety reasons, and it is stowed away in a secure location at her California home, a White House source told Reuters earlier. The source declined to identify the make of gun, but said it is the same gun Harris mentioned in 2019 on the campaign trail. Harris, the former district attorney of San Francisco and California attorney general, told reporters in 2019: "I am a gun owner, and I own a gun for probably the reason a lot of people do - for personal safety. I was a career prosecutor."

     STORY: The Teamsters union said Wednesday they won’t endorse any U.S. presidential candidate for the first time since 1996. That’s despite a majority of members backing Donald Trump over Kamala Harris in polls. A recent poll the Teamsters released Wednesday shows 59.6% of its members preferred the Republican candidate, compared to 34% for Democrat Harris. The union counts some 1.3 million members, working as everything from truck drivers and airline pilots to zookeepers. They have endorsed Democrats in every presidential contest since the year 2000. However, Teamsters President Sean O'Brien made a high-profile appearance at the Republican National Convention, backing Trump. He told Fox News the union's decision to decline an endorsement came after they, QUOTE, “couldn’t get solid commitments on our core issues” A Teamsters executive board endorsement could be important to either candidate in the November election. It's seen as a potential factor in a handful of battleground states that may decide the results, including Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania, where union membership is strong. Speaking to reporters in New York, Trump responded to the Teamsters decision not to endorse a candidate by saying “It's a great honor. They're not going to endorse the Democrats. That's a big thing." Most major unions have endorsed Harris, including the United Auto Workers union. The AFL-CIO, which represents 60 unions and 12.5 million workers, endorsed Harris in July.
