    In the year 220, the Han Empire divided into three kingdoms: Cao Wei (曹魏), Shu Han (蜀漢), and Dong Wu (東吳). This period of rival states was called the Three Kingdoms Period. Cao Wei (曹魏) was north of the Yangtze and was led by the Cao and Sima clans. They succeeded in conquering Shu Han (蜀漢) in the southwest around Sichuan and Dong Wu (東吳) in the southeast that had territory on the coast.
