  5. Synopsis. In Fort de France, Martinique, in the summer of 1940, shortly after the fall of France to the Germans, an American named Johnson hires professional fisherman Harry Morgan to take him fishing on Morgan's boat. Johnson complains about the cost of the expedition and the onboard presence of Eddie, a drunk, and Horatio, a native.

  6. Back at the hotel, Gerard (Frenchy), who is the hotel owner and a member of the Free French resistance, comes to Harry's room and asks him to take on a smuggling job for the Free French Resistance movement. Suddenly a sultry young woman ( Lauren Bacall) appears in his doorway asking for a match. Harry tosses her a box of matches and she leaves.

  7. Background. To Have and Have Not (1944) was director Howard Hawks' wartime adventure masterpiece - a minor film classic loosely based upon part of Ernest Hemingway's 1937 novel of the same name. Jules Furthman and William Faulkner partnered their talents to write the screenplay, retaining some of the sharp dialogue from the book.

  8. Comments: Lauren Bacall is great, and very beautiful, in her debut. It's the film where Bogie met Bacall, and they're not acting; they're falling in love. And we have Walter Brennan, as Bogie's tipsy pal, with his constant drunk ramblings. Okay script, a bit slow-moving at times. It's not Bogie's or Hawks' best, but still not bad.
