Today, Togo is a multiethnic state in West Africa with an area of 21,600 square miles, lying along the Gulf of Benin, sandwiched between Ghana, Benin, and Burkina Faso (see figure 1 ).
On August 7, 1914, at the outset of World War I, British and French colonial troops from the Gold Coast and Dahomey invaded Togoland and on August 26 secured the unconditional surrender of the Germans. Thereafter the western part of the colony was administered by Britain, the eastern part by France.
