He also served as a pilot in the 449th Fighter Squadron, where he was shot down and burned over China in 1943. He survived the crash, the fire, and the infection, and later became a sports broadcaster.
Tom Harmon is the first Michigan player to win the Heisman and the first of six players to also finish as runner up in the Heisman vote. He was a powerful single-wing tailback who scored 33 touchdowns, kicked two field goals, and threw 16 passes in 1940. He also played basketball and broadcasted sports for CBS, ABC and NBC.
