Born Thomas H. Farrell to Edna and Edward Farrell in Oceanside, New York. Farrell was the youngest of seven children. At a young age, he recalled being "furious" at the disingenuous crying of a child actor in an episode of the Brady Bunchwhich motivated him to pursue a career in acting despite his parents' objections.
Farrell graduated from Archbishop Molly High School in 1977 and went on earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Union College in Schenectady, New York in 1981.He was the "only arts major with a theater emphasis to graduate that year."
Upon joining the Screen Actors Guild, Farrell had to change his name as there was already a Tom Farrell.
