USAHS Acadia was the first United States Army Hospital Ship in World War II. Built in 1932 by Newport News Shipbuilding as a civilian passenger/cargo ocean liner for the Eastern Steamship Lines , the ship was in US coastal and Caribbean service prior to its acquisition by the US Maritime Administration in 1941.

Acadia (AD-42) was laid down on 14 February 1978 at San Diego, Calif., by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Co.; launched on 28 July 1979; sponsored by Mrs. Clarence R. Bryan, the wife of Vice-Admiral Clarence R. Bryan, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command; and commissioned on 6 June 1981, Capt. Brenton P. Hardy in command.
The class will be composed of USS YELLOWSTONE (AD-41), USS ACADIA (AD-42), USS CAPE COD (AD-43), and USS SHENANDOAH (AD-44) when the ships are all completed. The keel was laid on Valentine ' s Day, 1978. On July 28 of the following year, Mrs. Ardis Bryan launched AD- 42 with a bottle of champagne, christening her ACA- DIA .
