  2. Released early in 1996, Underworld’s second album – Second Toughest In The Infants – saw the band push further into the unknown to create what is unarguably one of the UK’s greatest electronic records – an utterly unique eight track sonic journey through techno, drum’n’bass, minimalist composition and ambient music.

  6. Oct 24, 2023 · Underworld’s last album was ‘Drift Songs’ in 2019. It came as part of a new project called ‘Drift’ which saw the band release new music, art and text pieces weekly over the course of a year.

    • “Juanita:Kiteless:To Dream Of Love” (from Second Toughest In The Infants, 1996) The best song in Underworld’s catalog, the single strongest argument for their genius, isn’t a single thing at all.
    • “Jumbo” (from Beaucoup Fish, 1999) “I need sugar.” That just about sums it up! Bouncy, bubbly, and as sweet as that lyric would indicate, “Jumbo” helped Underworld round out their three-album run as a trio in grand style.
    • “Born Slippy .NUXX” (from the “Born Slippy” single, 1995) This is the big one. Plucked from B-side obscurity by soon-to-be frequent UW collaborator Danny Boyle for the closing sequence of his indie smash Trainspotting, this unrecognizable sorta-remix of what may as well have been an entirely different track (all they really share is the title) hit #2 in the UK charts following the film’s success.
    • “Dirty Epic” (from Dubnobasswithmyheadman, 1994) The best track on what was for all intents and purposes Underworld’s debut album, “Dirty Epic” pulled off a balancing act with a preposterously high degree of difficulty.
  7. Underworld. UK electronic music act formed by Rick Smith and Karl Hyde in 1987 after their former band Freur disbanded. The first line-up released more song oriented funky guitar based pop over the course of two albums. In 1991 the core duo returned with a new track oriented technoid direction and a new ally: DJ Darren Emerson.
