Located 16.5 miles (26.6 km) east-northeast of Charing Cross, it is one of the locally important district centres identified in the London Plan. Historically a rural village, it formed an ancient parish in the Chafford hundred of the county of Essex.

- John A. Brentwood, UK 416 contributions. Trip with local U3A Interest Group. An excellent visit with knowledgeable guides and a fascinating structure. Add to that the archaeological area and the garden, it was a great visit enjoyed by all.
- sp4d. Barking, UK20 contributions. Popped out for a stroll. Popped in for a stroll, had a nice cuppa at the cafe then did the walking trails .Lovely place to visit, friendly staff great to get a breath of fresh air.
- clarkesLondon. london 26 contributions. Half term Visit. Visited today, weather dreadful and it was half term so extremely busy. Eventually found a table to sit at but sadly the previous people didn’t bother th throw their rubbish away even though there was a bin practically next to table.
- AmyY933. Essex 6 contributions. Great. Very impressed first time coming. Children age 4 & 9. Plenty for both. Very reasonable admission price. Disappointed beach was closed once we arrived and settled but manager was apologetic.
