Ivan III died in 1505 and was succeeded by Vasily Ivanovich (Vasily III) who inherited a large territory ruled from Moscow which laid claims to being the successor of the Byzantine Empire. Dmitry Ivanovich on the other hand ended his days in 1509 still in prison. Reign of Vasily III.
