Vitslav II (c. 1240 – 1302), variously called Vislav, Vizlav, Wislaw, Wizlaw and Witslaw in English sources (German: Wizlaw II) was a prince of Rügen.[1] Life[edit] Vitslav was probably born between 1240 and 1245 as the son of Prince Jaromar II of Rügen and Euphemia, a daughter of Duke Swantopolk II of East Pomerania.
Rügen would have fallen to Vitslav's nephew, Wartislaw IV, but Wartislav died in 1326, causing the Rügen war of succession. The Minnesinger Vitslav is likely identical with Vitslav III. There are 14 songs and 13 poems by this author which are preserved as an addition to the Jenaer Liederhandschrift (foll. 72vb - 80vb)
Afterwards the princes of Rügen had to recognise Danish suzerainty. On their accession to power, the Rügen princes were forced to confirm their allegiance to the Danish king and were obliged to provide military support to the Danes. In 1304 Vitslav III of Rügen gained sole lordship over the territory on the death of his brother, Sambor.
