Walter Lantz was an American cartoonist, animator, film producer, and film director from New Rochelle, New York. He was the eponymous founder of the animation studio Walter Lantz Productions (1928-1972). The studio was initially famous for continuing the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film series from 1928 to 1938.

Born in 1899 to an immigrant Italian family in New Rochelle, New York, Walter Lantz began working in the field of animation at the age of sixteen. In 1922, he moved to New York City where he assumed a directing position at the John R. Bray Studios. Lantz introduced his first original cartoon creation, Dinky Doodle, in 1924.
