The college was established as a women's college in 1868, called Wells Seminary, by Henry Wells, co-founder of Wells Fargo and the American Express Company. Wells had the building for Wells Seminary constructed on property he donated. Two years later, in 1870, the seminary adopted its current name, Wells College.

Mar 11, 2024 · Overall Experience. Wells has some amazing teachers and a good culture. The courses are not overly challenging, and many teachers taught in a very friendly, engaging, supportive way. However, there were some deep problems on an administrative level that lead to a lot of difficulties that impacted many students.
Wells College offers a modern, flexible undergraduate curriculum rooted in the liberal arts. Our students are aspiring doctors, lawyers, health care professionals, poets, activists, pharmaceutical scientists, entrepreneurs and change-making leaders of the world. Interdisciplinary dialogue and hands-on experience are part of every academic program.
In 2004, after 136 years of leadership in women’s education, the college opened its doors to students of all genders. Since then, current and past Wells College students continue to bond over a shared and enduring tradition of scholarship and community.
